Plagiocephaly=flattened head

Plagiocephaly is a condition that causes babies to get a flat spot on the back of their heads. My Paige has this. The process is actually really neat how they do it. We went to Toledo to have a digital scan of her head done.

*note...My pictures are not in order so bear with me.

They put a little "do rag" on her head (to flatten out her hair) and lay her on this machine called a "star scanner". Literally, a second later a 3D image of her head appears on the computer. They used to do a plaster mold of a child's head...can you imagine trying to get a mold that way?.. Thank goodness for technology...
The scan then goes to a company in Florida who makes the helmet or it's sometimes referred to as a band. In about 2 weeks you get the helmet. The doctor then shaves any extra off of the helmet. ie. around the ears, etc. The doctor also gives you the mold of you child's head. If you look close at the head picture you can see where some plaster was added. Those are the areas where they want her head to grow. So the helmet has "pockets" of space in those areas where her head is allowed to grow. I hope that makes sense...
The band/helmet comes plain, or you can get it with a color. As you can see I chose to get a plain one so that I could decorate it for Paige. I bought oil based sharpie markers from Michael's. I still need to put a protective coating on it but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to. Paige has to wear the band 23 hours a day. That doesn't leave much drying time! However, the Sharpie markers dry fast and I can just do touch ups. I've actually have had people ask me if she had surgery or if she has to wear it to not bang her head. I've also had a lady say that she sees helmets all the time on kids. (like its a new fashion trend... Lol)
