Do you remember where you were when 9/11 happened? I'm sure the answer is yes.
I was engaged to Jim, and living in Lynchburg, VA. At the time I was working for Industrial Products Company. While I worked there, I listened to the radio everyday in my office.
That day, I remember hearing the DJ say that a plane hit one of the Twin Towers. At the time they thought it was a small plane - like a Cessna. I went to one of my co-workers and told them a plane hit one of the towers. We went into the conference room and turned on the tv. I couldn't believe what I saw...another plane hitting the other tower! Except it was big plane, filled with people. And then we learned the other plane was also a big plane filled with people and that there was a plane that went down in Pennsylvania and one that hit the Pentagon! I felt like I was watching one of those "end of the world" movies. Except it was real and the United States was literally under attack. From that point on, I couldn't keep my eyes off the tv. I couldn't help but feel so fortunate to be alive and still have my family and friends because so many did not anymore.
Right now there are thousands of families who are still mourning the loss of their loved ones from that day. I recently read an article about people (rescue workers and those who lived near the towers) who are dying from cancer from the toxins caused by the attacks. The tragedy didn't stop on 9/11 and unfortunately it will continue...
There were so many heroes from that day and I think as a nation we put aside our differences and just wanted to help our fellow Americans.
So in remembrance, I will hug my family a little tighter and tell them i love them and be thankful.
Please share where you were and what you were doing that day. I would love to hear your story.
I was at work in Warren, PA, and one of the girls said a plane hit one of the World Trade Centers....then she said another plane hit the other Tower....I thought she had lost her marbles. Obviously, that was only the beginning of what was to happen that day. Another hit the Pentagon and my mom had her friend's husband call me at work (she couldn't get through and he worked in Warren) and tell me to call her. I did and she told me to get home. I told her if another plane crashed, I would. I no more than said that and the one went down in PA. Too close for comfort. I left my boss a note and out the door I went.
ReplyDeleteI headed to my sister's house and we sat on her couch with our eyes glued to the TV and could NOT believe what we were watching unfold.
I remember that night going walking and how eerily quiet it was. The mandatory grounding of planes made it so quiet in our area. I never realized how much white noise those planes were.
I remember in the coming weeks talking to my friend who was in the National Guard. He went to NYC to help with the cleanup and told me that as they went down the street, people were standing on the edge of it holding signs saying "Thank you for your help."
The one good thing that came of it was the outpouring of support amongst our nation. Suddenly everyone was united, as we're meant to be.
